October 2013 Meeting Notes

A good number of members were present at the October meeting.  There were a few apologies from some who were unable to attend due to illness and the group sent best wishes for speedy recoveries.  We hope to see you back with us soon.

Renewals for 2014 are due now.  You may pay by cash, cheque, money order or direct bank transfer.  You can find more information on the Join Us page.

The Queensland Combined Machine Knitters (QCMK) ‘Spring into Summer’ workshop, held 11 October, was discussed.  All present agreed that the presenters were well worth seeing and very knowledgeable, however the scheduling slipped so the first session was cut very short and the wrap up at the end was very long with the result that the participants didn’t get away as planned.  At least one of the demonstrators could have used the assistance the microphone offered, but this was not provided.  This feedback will be provided to the committee in the hope that alternative arrangements may be made so the workshops held in the future will proceed more smoothly.  I learned some new things, proving that you can teach a old dog new tricks.

The October meeting was cancelled as it did not reach a quorum.  The Annual General Meeting is on 20 November and a representative from each of the clubs should go along and vote in the election of committee members.

General Business

The Passap meeting to be held on 26 November is the Christmas Lunch, marking the end of the year, with members to bring a plate and a knitted Christmas ornament.  Be prepared to demonstrate how you made it!  A list of dishes being provided by members has been started, so if you plan to attend and are not on the list yet, please email brisbanepassap@gmail.com with what you would like to bring to ensure a balance of dishes between sweet and savoury.

Meetings for 2014 were discussed and the demonstrations will start by working on Eleanor Goldfinch’s workshop examples.  At the January meeting we will be working on some of the techniques using Deco Card 19.  If you use an E6000 you will have to draw a reader card or create a file in Creation 6 or Win Crea.

The April meeting has to be moved to 2 May due to Good Friday and Anzac Day taking the last two Fridays in April.

Put 25 July 2014 in your diary now, as that is when the Annual Passap Workshop will be held.  The presenter is yet to be decided but it is always worthwhile to attend on the day.  More information will be available on the Events page.

Show and Tell this month was:

Brigitte got together with Shirley and Margaret from Toowoomba and experimented with Pattern 1004/Tech 139 from Fay Butcher’s 2010 workshop (page 12) and brought their samples to share with us.  They had used several different yarns and decided that Bramwell’s 4 ply gave the most pleasing result.

Bonnie (me) brought along a baby blanket made from the pattern number 3949 from Passap Model Book 39, made using Pattern 1130 on the E6000, which is the same as Deco Card 77.  It was knitted from two strands of Cashmilon in pale blue, which is a bit wimpy.  Margaret K suggested using a strand of Silky to add a bit of firmness.  It had been hand washed, spun to get the water out and dried in the tumble dryer to bring out the softness of the yarn.

Demonstration

The demonstration this month was bust darts and instructions and video will be posted in the members area in the next few days.
